Dengue fever is a flu-like viral disease spread by the bite of infected mosquitoes. The most common Dengue fever symptoms usually are: high fever, rash, severe headache, pain behind the eyes, and muscle and joint pain. The severity of the joint pain has given Dengue the name “break-bone fever.” Because there is no vaccine available against Dengue fever, the best idea is prevention. Prevention centers on avoiding mosquito bites when traveling to areas where Dengue occurs. To avoid mosquito’s bite use mosquito repellents on skin and clothing, ware long-sleeved shirts and long pants tucked into socks. Stay in air-conditioned or screened areas and use bed nets if sleeping areas are not screened or air-conditioned. Eliminate mosquito breeding sites in areas where dengue might occur (especially around homes).
